Folklore: Devining Love At Halloween
The tradition of devining the future and finding out about your love life at Halloween started a long while ago in Ireland, where the mysterious Druids created sacred bonfires on the tops of hills and carried out ancient rites at midnight on the 31st October.
The divinations and folk lore connected with Halloween spread over from Ireland to Britain, and eventually made their way through Europe and immigrants brought them across the ocean to the new shores of North America where the new world promised them freedom and a better way of life.
In the United States and especially in some parts of New England, many young and unmarried girls still observe these two Halloween love traditions. The first tradition means that they carry a candlelit lantern to a spring of water and gaze into the depths of the water at midnight. If this is done in total silence, then the reflection of their future husband is said to appear. If no reflection appears, then this is an sign that the girl’s marriage will not take place that next year.
The second way which is popular among women who want to see as to what their husband-to-be and children may look like demands that the girl to go to a spring of water at dawn on Halloween. She must carry a glass which contains a broken egg into which a small amount of the fresh water has been poured. The girl must then gaze into the glass in complete silence.
If the girl carries out these instructions very carefully and if marriage and children are in her future, an apparition of her family-to-be will appear in the egg and water mixture. However, if no apparition is seen, then marriage and children are not going to happen in the coming year.
