Some Old Halloween Folk Customs : The Church Porch Watch
The old Halloween folk custom known as the “Church Porch Watch” was a widespread happening in Wales, as well as some parts of England until the last few years of the nineteenth century.
At midnight on Halloween, those people who wanted to know who was going to die in their village over the next year would gather in the porch of the church and stay there all night. They would keep a vigilant eye out for the ghosts of those people who were marked by Death to come to knock on their door during the next year.
Irish Custom: Throwing the Shoe
The Irish have a simple method of devining the future which is known as ‘throwing the shoe’. If a person wants to know about his future, he takes off one of his shoes on Halloween night and tosses it over the roof of his house. If his shoe lands on the ground and points away from the house, then this is a signal that the owner will soon be travelling in the direction of the shoe.
If the shoe lands on the earth but points towards the house, there is no travelling in the coming twelve months for the wearer. It is considered good luck if his shoe lands with its sole downwards. However, if his shoe lands with its sole up, this could be a sign of imminent bad luck or possibly even death.
Another Halloween devining custom involving shoes entails a girl to taking off both her shoes when she goes to bed on Halloween night and placing them at right angles in the shape of the letter T. The following must then be said:
I have crossed my shoes in the shape of a Tee;
Hoping that this night my true love I might see,
Not in his best riches or his very worst array,
But in his own clothes he wears every day.
The vision of the girl’s future husband may then appear by her bed or be seen if she glances over her right shoulder. Often, he may appear to her in a dream. If no there is no appearance, then this means that the girl will not marry before next Halloween.
